Lago Creek in General Santos City - Philippines
At last, for amateur divers as well as those who would want to see less damaged corals along the stretch of dive points in Sarangani Bay, here is the dive spot for them. Lago Creek is among the many dive sites situated along the eastern portion of Sarangani Bay. But unlike the other dive points in the area where the waves and visibility are largely affected by the turbulent weather, at Lago Creek, those who are just starting out in diving could still do pretty well in here.
To reach Lago Creek, the only form of direct transportation would be by boat to and from any of the dive points in Sarangani Bay. Meanwhile, to get to Sarangani Bay from the General Santos City proper, all one has to do is to get a habal habal, tricycle, or jeepney ride going to Tambler. From there, ask to be brought to Sarangani Bay, where, upon alighting, you may be summoned to take a boat going to Lago Creek.
Once one gets to Lago Creek, he will most probably notice how mild the waves are as he dives, and the fact that he can move as freely as he wants in it. There are pinnacle formations and slopes here and there, but they are easy to maneuver and go out and in to. Of course, one must not forget the sights. The pinnacle formations mentioned earlier, these will not be pinnacle formations associated with Lago Creek if these are not teeming with schools of fish.
There are of course lots of corals, many of which have not been affected by blast fishing, although some have been affected by the black algae scare caused by aqua culture and industrial pollution that wrecked havoc to General Santos seas about five years back. The affected area is continuously being held as subject of research and rehabilitation by marine biology specialists and students in Mindanao. On the other hand, on areas that were not affected by the black algae scare, outcrops continuously grow, as well as new species. Turtles are also a constant attraction at Lago Creek.
As mentioned earlier, it is all right for beginners to venture into the Lago Creek. This is because, compared to all other dive spots at Sarangani Bay, the waves and visibility at Lago Creek are more diver friendly. Those who are advanced divers would also find fun at the Lago Creek, especially because it holds a lot of exciting underwater sceneries for all to see.
