Casa Goatan in General Santos City - Philippines
Only in the Philippines can you find a restaurant devoted to preparing and serving all goat dishes. Thats right! Although some people may find it inhumane or unusual, its something that happens everyday at the Casa Goatan restaurant. It is not a full fledged fine dining resto for it is made for the masses and there are a lot of single chairs and row chairs in the resto. Its interiors are pretty plain and there are rooms that are air conditioned but most patrons prefer to eat al fresco (because they would like to smoke while eating).
The Casa Goatan has the reputation for safe and clean preparation of their animals. They have their own farm where they breed them so it is a good bet that they make their goats nice and juicy. Normally goats from outside sources normally eat anything that is fed to them but the ones raised by Casa Goatan are fed soft grass, hay, and sometimes oats so that the meat is clean and no other contaminants are present. Sometimes the patrons request for baby goats and the owners oblige but charge a special rate for that.
One of the favorite meals in Casa Goatan is the adobong kambing. The goat is tenderized and cooked adobo style. Lots of vinegar and soy sauce are the main ingredients of the dish and as a side note many dishes including vegetables can be cooked this way as well.
The dishes served can be served as a meal which comes with rice and some sidings or as an appetizer or "pulutan". This resto is one place that serves both the drinking and eating crowd.
However, some people may not like goat for the goat has a very strong smell. The removal of the smell is one of the biggest challenges that face a resto that serves them. In Casa Goatan, they do an excellent job of removing it thereby making the meal and enjoyable and pleasurable experience.
The resto also prepares goat meals to go but they advise those who take it home to either freeze it or consume the meal right away for goat meat spoils rapidly.
Sometimes the resto comes up with special dishes - that involve goat - for a limited time. Sometimes the owners like to experiment with different taste combinations and let the customers decide. Old faves like Adobong goat or "kambing" and Sisig goat top the list every time.
Opened in July 2004, the resto continues to serve exotic foods. They can be located at Bulaong subdivision, near the Dunker Zone internet cafe in General Santos city.
